Irish Seisiun (Session)

The second AND fourth Thursday of EVERY month! That means its time for our Irish Seisiun! What is an Irish Seisiun?

Unlike a performance, the musicians at a seisiun are playing for enjoyment as much for each other as for anyone who comes to listen. There are a core group of players, and others who drop in now and then. In fact, we never know who will show up or what instruments they will play—all completely acoustic and unamplified bringing the barn to life organically!

Usually one person will start a tune, and those who know it join in. Musicians play until they feel like stopping or switch tunes. The origin and spirit of this music is in playing for dancers. If Irish dancers drop by to this seisiun, they will be welcome, too! Feel free to make requests if you know an Irish tune.

To this group of musicians, virtuosity is less valued than the collective effort.

Mike Montrey Band
Apr

6:00 PM18:00

Mike Montrey Band

At his core, the introspective 47-year-old Montrey is the prototypical road-worn artist who has lived enough life to pour those experiences into his craft with uncompromising honesty. From passing family members, going through a divorce, having a child, and starting a business running music programs for adults with disabilities, adulthood’s joys and tests have all etched their marks into his soul over the last turbulent decade-plus.

In terms of legacy, Montrey has been a fixture in the music scene long enough to avoid clichés about musical journeys; his work speaks for itself. His previous collaborations with names like Grammy-winning producers Jim Scott and Marc Swersky brought different flavors to his music. However, with Love, Time & Mortality, Montrey brings us into his most personal songwriting yet.

Aided by an impeccable cast of musicians, like pedal steel wizard Jack Stanton and upright bassist Mike Noordzy, vocalist Jen Augustine, Santo Rizzolo on drums, violinist Nicole Scorsone, and John Ginty on Hammond B3 organ, Vintage Vibe, and piano, every passage hits with uncanny human warmth and intimacy. Just absorb the gorgeous closer “Emotionally Yours,” where Montrey’s gruff baritone wraps itself around Bob Dylan’s timeless melody like a long-lost relative sharing sage advice by the fireside.

In the end, Montrey emerges as that song’s namesake – an emotionally rich storyteller baring his soul and psyche in a brutally honest fashion. Love, Time & Mortality is his State of the Human Condition address, confronting our deepest strifes and joys without filter or copious arty pretense getting in the way.

Erika Sherger Trio
May
17
6:00 PM18:00

Erika Sherger Trio

Erika Sherger is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Northern New Jersey. Though she has been writing songs and playing instruments since she was a child, she was essentially a closet songwriter for many years, practicing guitar and using songwriting as a tool to process her emotions. After life circumstances conspired in just the right way to make her ready to share her music, Erika went to her first open mic in 2019. She felt at home immediately in the warm and supportive music community in Northern NJ and she immersed herself in the local music scene. Before long, she began recording her music and playing shows with some of the new friends she met on her musical journey.

Erika's songs are honest and raw responses to the different emotional terrain she has traversed, from found and lost love, losing her mother to ALS, to riding her completely blind horse, Levon.

Erika openly embraces the beauty and pain of life, and her voice (both figuratively and literally) is clear and powerful. The emotional rawness of her songs really reach into the heart and have been known to evoke deep emotion in some listeners. The autobiographical style of her songs, set among an indie folk/ Americana landscape, tells stories with courage and humility. Erika's songs ring true with an authenticity that is enhanced by her unique and memorable vocal style, which is most often compared to Stevie Nicks, Linda Rondstadt and Natalie Merchant.

Erika grew up listening to the Beatles, the classic rock of the 60's and 70's, Neil Young, 80's pop (Pat Benatar and Cyndi Lauper), and favorite artists such as Peter Gabriel and the Grateful Dead. Her songwriting is heavily informed by Americana, indie folk and alt-country like Ryan Adams, Wilco, Iron and Wine and many others.

Erika can often be found playing songwriter shows or playing weekend gigs at bars, restaurants and coffee houses in New Jersey and Pennsylania. She released her first EP, Like Birds, in March 2021, a complication of 8 songs she wrote during COVID. Her second release, a full-length album of 12 songs called Bad Wolf, was released in March 2023. Erika is currently recording her third album, which she hopes to release in summer or fall of 2024.

Jon Caspi & The First Gun
May
31
6:00 PM18:00

Jon Caspi & The First Gun

Jon Caspi & The First Gun are a multi-genre band, from heartland rock to punk, indie, Americana, anthem, and even folk...they do it all.

Caspi has been a longstanding figure in the NJ indie, singer/songwriter, alternative and punk scenes. In the late 80’s he fronted the new wave band Bouncing Off Bob, which charted on the national college radio CMJ Top 100. He started as a solo artist in the early 2000’s with the release of three albums, which received national radio play and one was converted into a musical theater production with sold out shows. His song This Town, about the town of Keyport, NJ, became a town “hit” resulting in the local diner naming a sandwich after him, called “The Caspi Special.”

In 2011, Caspi started revisiting his punk and American anthem roots with his band Jon Caspi & The First Gun. One of the band's major achievements came in the form of a barroom, hooligan, singalong and fan favorite, Raise ‘Em High!  This song has become a cult hit in his home state of New Jersey. Legendary WFMU DJ, Jonesey, has selected this tune as his official 2pm toast song which has increased the band’s fanbase and is at the center of a large Facebook group. In 2022, they recorded a new version of the song with Jonesey listener and NYC music icon, Jesse Malin (D Generation), who sings on the track. Dez Cadena (Black Flag, Misfits), who was a member of The First Gun from 2017-2022 is also featured on the track. The band’s label, Fake Chapter Records, released the track on streaming platforms and on vinyl. A local brewery also released a beer, inspired by the track and called Raise Em High! The mayor of Aberdeen, NJ signed a proclamation making it the official beer of Aberdeen Day. The band has collaborated with other notable artists including Richard Holgarth (Eddie & The Hotrods, John Otway) and Pete Steinkopf (Bouncing Souls).  A full-lenth is planned for late 2024/early 2025.

A compelling live artist and storyteller, Caspi, performs both with band and solo acoustic  and has shared the stage with acts such as Bruce Springsteen, The Psychedelic Furs, The Gaslight Anthem, Glenn Tillbrook (Squeeze), The Smithereens, ~X~, Dramarama, Willie Nile, Jeffrey Gaines, Jesse Malin, The Dickies, Adolescents, The Wallflowers, & many more.

Cold Weather Company (21+)

Cold Weather Company blends the influences and experiences of three singer-songwriters (Steve Shimchick, Jeff Petescia, and Brian Curry) into a cinematic, storytelling soundscape. What sprouted with a serendipitous park bench meeting at Rutgers University grew roots through dorm room and cabin recordings, branching out with performances near and far. With mirroring guitars on either side of the piano, the band’s symmetry reflects this balance between individuality and cohesion.

On their latest records and for select live shows, the trio is joined by percussion, brass, strings, and more instrumentation to expand their distinctive alternative-folk foundation.

Love and respect for their craft, supplemented by a desire to contribute to the dynamic world of music propels CWC as they approach their eleventh anniversary as a band. With more than 10 million online streams and 60 released songs, CWC is excited to announce more music and performance dates this year, with a fifth full-length album due by early 2025.

Old Time & Bluegrass Session & Jam with LHSB

Join Long Hill String Band every FIRST Thursday of the month. These sessions are 100% acoustic, run 7-9 and all are welcome to bring an instrument and play.

A bit about the Long Hill String Band:

The Long Hill String Band, with fiddle, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, guitar and voice, plays Old-Time music, also called American roots music or bluegrass, although Old Time is the predecessor to blue grass. The music includes reels, jigs, square dance tunes, waltzes, rags and ballads, and tunes to sing along with.

The music dates mostly to the 1800’s with its roots principally from England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany and Africa. Settlers from these areas carried with them tunes and instruments from their homelands to the Appalachian mountains and valleys, where they created a new music style that embodied their hardships, joys, and experiences.

The Long Hill String Band is comprised of Karl Varnai (fiddle), George Skic (bass), Bob Bell (banjo, vocal), Charlie Pearlman (guitar, vocal), Bob Safranek (mandolin), and Ron Steveson (fiddle, vocal).

Irish Seisiun (Session)
